DIY Heated Insoles: How to Make and Charge Them

How Long Do Heated Insoles Last?

The working time of heated insoles depends on several factors such as the heating power, size and material of the insoles, and usage conditions. Manufacturers usually specify the heating time, which can vary from a few hours to several days, depending on the model. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and not use heated insoles for more than a few hours at a time.

Creating Heated Insoles Yourself

To make warm insoles, you will need the following materials:

Start with a spiral for electric hotplates (power – approximately 500 W). Next, purchase two connectors and a wire. You will also need a cardboard box to cut out the insoles.

Mark the cardboard insoles crosswise every centimeter and measure the approximate length of nichrome wire you will need.

Each insole at 12-14 V from the power source will subsequently consume about 0.5 A of electric current, heating up to 35 degrees Celsius.

Make cuts along the perimeter of each insole to lay the nichrome wire. Measure the resistance of the wire to achieve 24 Ohms.

Connect the ends of the nichrome wire to the copper wire using contacts. Secure these connections with threads to prevent them from pulling out. Cover or secure this construction with paper tape.

Attach plate-like contacts to the ends of the copper wire and insulate them with heat shrink tubing or electrical tape.

Run the wires up the pant leg starting from the waist to the shoes. Connect them to the insoles. Connect to the power source fastened to the waist – use a 12 V, 1.2 Ah battery.

This can be carried in one of your jacket pockets. It lasts for 1 hour of uninterrupted and efficient operation at temperatures of -5 degrees, and at -15 degrees for a maximum of half an hour. In such cases, replace the battery with a new or spare one.

Charging Heated Insoles

The charging time for heated insoles also depends on several factors, including the heating power, size and material of the insoles, and the quality and power of the charger. Manufacturers usually indicate the charging time, which can vary from a few hours to several hours. It is recommended to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and not charge heated insoles for more than the specified time. Also, ensure that the charger has the correct voltage and current for charging heated insoles.
